NADMO boats to the rescue of flood victims

Adankrono (E/R), July 26, GNA – Difficulties encountered by travellers to Kade as a result of the Birim River floods had been eased with the arrival of two boats sent to the place by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

The NADMO team with soldiers from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces arrived with the boats on Saturday evening and started work in earnest.

Orderly queues were formed at both the Adankrono and Kade ends of the river and travellers were being transported free of charge.

Also actively in the business of ferrying persons and goods were eight dug-out canoes for a fee of one cedi.

The NADMO boats carried 22 passengers each with a crew of three whereas the hand-dug canoes carried up to five people.

When the river broke its banks last Thursday night, the only way of travelling was by a tractor which made several trips but the tractor however broke down.

There were some people who guided travellers to wade through the floods for a fee and some carried travellers on their shoulders for a fee of two cedis.

But that was a dangerous since the water was at certain sections at the chest level.

The floods have created interest, attracting large numbers of people to observe the spectacle.

In a related development, the floods have caused great havoc at both Adankrono and Kade with those living along the banks of the river experiencing hardships.

Those at Kade Zongo which is near the bridge were hit by the floods and a large number of houses were in water.
