KNUST Records 2 Votes Out Of 2923 Registered Electorates

The District Assembly election in the Ashanti Region which was scheduled for Wednesday December 29, 2010 has recorded a low turnout according to reports.

At the Great Hall Electoral Area located on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), only 2 people had voted as at 16:30 GMT when Focus FM visited the polling station.

Frank Kwakye is the Presiding Officer of the area. In an interview with Focus FM, he said, “the turnout has been very low because only 2 people have voted out of a total of 2923 registered electorates since morning”.

Mr. Kwakye explained that the postponement of the date has created a lot of inconveniences. He said the Christmas vacation period has also contributed to the low patronage since most of the electorates are students of the KNUST. “The reason why people have not voted is that most of the voters are students and they are on vacation so most of them have left campus for home “. He lamented.

Answering questions about logistics for the elections in the area, the officer said there is nothing like shortages of voting materials and that everything is intact.

However, areas such as Kwadaso, Nhyiaeso and Atwima Nwabiagya could not have the polls due to absence of materials.
