Pass the Sport Bill by December or face sanctions - IOC tells Ghana

Accra, Oct. 20, GNA - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure the enactment of the Sports Bill by the end of the year in order to bring a lasting solution to the current impasse at the fronts of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

"Should the processes not be completed by the end of the year, as per your commitment and also given that this matter has been going on for too long, the IOC would unfortunately be obliged to consider the protective measures provided in the Olympic Charter" The IOC declared in a letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

In a letter signed by Pere Miro, National Olympic Committee, (NOC) International Relations Director and sent to the sector Minister, Ms Akua Sena Dansua, it said "we have taken great satisfaction at the revision process of your sports legislation that shall be finalized in a way that is compatible with the basic principles of the Olympic Charter and regulations of the International Sports Federations".

According to the letter, the Sports Bill if completed by the end of the year would also pave way for the GOC to have its general elections to elect its recognised leaders. The IOC also called on the Minister to give the GOC the necessary support to operate until the fresh elections are held, adding that the elections must be done in a coordinated and constructive manner that will benefit the Olympic movement. 20 Oct. 10
