More private vehicles involve in accidents on the Tema Motorway

Tema, Oct 19, GNA - More private vehicles as compared to commercial vehicles were involved in accidents on the Tema Motorway between July and September.

Out of a total of 84 vehicles involved in 59 accidents in the third quarter of this year, 48 were private while 36 were commercial vehicles.

Superintendent Daniel Ansong-Dankyi, the Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the GNA in an interview that four motor bikes were also involved in the accidents.

He attributed the high rate of accidents on the Motorway involving private vehicles to speeding.

Four lives were lost in the 59 motorway accidents while 10 were categorized as serious and 35 as minor injuries.

He said the Unit recorded 202 accidents involving 296 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, as compared to the 299 recorded during the same period last year.

Out of this year's first quarter records, 36 persons were killed, showing an increase over the 31 loss of lives in the first quarter of 2009.

He said his outfit also recorded 421 accident cases involving 611 vehicles in the second quarter of the year and this shows more than the 2009 figure of 203.

The Tema MTTU Commander cautioned drivers against over-speeding and other motor and traffic offences which could cause accidents, to help curb the increasing rate of accidents in the region, especially on the Motorway.
