Rampant violations of human rights is due to ignorance

Cape Coast, Feb. 26, GNA - The Project Coordinator of the Commonwealth Human Right Initiative (CHRI), Mrs Mina Mensah, has said rampant violations of human rights were due to ignorance and therefore the public must know their constitutional rights in order to protect them. Speaking on the theme "The rights of arrested persons in Ghana" as part of the CHRI's human rights awareness forum for students of the Ghana National College in Cape Coast, she said the rights of many Ghanaians are being violated because they lack knowledge on their rights.

She said a person arrested or detained has the right to know why he was arrested and the right to a lawyer and where he cannot afford the services of a lawyer he also has the right to seek legal aid, provided by the state free of charge.

The Central Regional Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Benjamin Osei Addai appealed to students to be law abiding and concentrate on their studies.
