Northern Chiefs unanimous on creation of new region

Tamale, Oct. 1, GNA - The Northern Regional House of Chiefs on Thursday unanimously agreed on the creation of either one or two regions out of the current Northern Region to spur the development and progress of the area.

The House took the decision based on a suggestion by the Vice President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, that it should come out with a decision on the need or otherwise to create a new region. Members of the House noted that the creation of the new region or regions would not only enhance the development of the area but make governance easier since it was cumbersome for one government representative to govern the area properly.

Naa Professor John Sebiyan Nabila, President of the National House of Chiefs urged the House to set up a committee to come out with a definitive decision as to the number of regions to be created. Naa Nabila, also the Chief of Wulugu Traditional Area, said the committee must comprise experts from the four kingdoms of the House and must be devoid of any interference.

Yagbon Wura Bawah Abudu Doshie, President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, noted that the creation of the region must take into consideration the existing kingdoms before the Northern Region was created and demarcate the regions as such.

He said he made the request for the creation of new regions some time past adding that he was grateful the issue had received much attention by the current administration.

Mr Steven Sumani Nayina, Northern Regional Minister, also endorsed the unanimous decision saying, "the issue is so dear to my heart and I am happy a decision had been made on this". The House would therefore convey the message to the Vice President for further consideration.
