Government asked to establish workshops for TVET

Winneba, (C/R), July 26, GNA - Dr Mrs Adeline Arkhurst, Lecturer at the Home Economics Department of the University of Education, Winneba, has called on the government to establish well-resourced workshops for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) to enhance the teaching and learning.

She said the only way to ensure that students acquired employable skills was to ensure that they were provided with the basic tools and equipment.

Dr Arkhurst made the call at the launch of the first Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration of the Nananom Senior High School at Asanful near Winneba on Saturday. The celebration, to be climaxed in December this year, is under the theme; "Ensuring a Holistic Education for the Adolescent: The Key to Effective Human Resource Development". Dr Arkhurst said the establishment of the workshops, as had been done for Science Centres, would enable the students to do practical work to further improve their competence.

She said the perception that vocational study was for students with poor results should be discarded because "most developed countries are in their present positions because they paid good attention to vocational and technical education". Dr Arkhurst advised the children to desist from watching unhealthy films on the internet and appealed to parents to provide the needs of their children to encourage them to learn hard. Mr Eric Appiah, Headmaster of the school said the school was establish in July 2006 with 17 pupils but now had 127 pupils. He gave the assurance that the school would turn out disciplined and useful scholars and urged parents to invest in their children's education. Nii Ephraim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, expressed concern about the low turnout of parents at the function and urged them to be interested in activities concerning their children's education. 26 July 09
