Eleven second cycle schools campaign against social vices

Accra, May 21, GNA - Student representatives from 11 second cycle schools across the country on Thursday showcased their commitment to campaign against social vices in the country. The students stated their position in a national showcase at the final phase of Project Citizen Ghana, a portfolio-based civic education programme aimed at promoting competent and responsible participation in local and national government. The target of students from Accra High Senior School is to fight against environmental pollution; Mawuli Senior High School from the Volta Region would focus on youth unemployment and Archbishop Porter Girls School from the Western Region is to crusade against road accidents.

Others are Tema Senior High School from Greater Accra Region to fight against drug trafficking; St Francis Xavier Seminary representing Upper West Region will work to reverse the high rate of rejected ballot papers during Election 2008.

The rest are Aburi Girls Senior High School representing Eastern Region has the issue of girl child education in Akuapim South Municipality; Adisadel College representing Central Region will deal with corruption in the country and Tamale Senior High School representing Northern Region would focus on unemployment at Sanarigu. The Rock Foundation High Academy representing Upper East Region, will champion the fight against the increasing rate of road accidents; Notre Damme Senior High representing Brong Ahafo Region will be concerned with lack of standard library in schools in the Sunyani Municipality and St Louis Senior High School representing Ashanti Region is also to fight against drug abuse.

The final competition of Project Citizen Ghana on the theme: "Consolidating Democracy through Youth Participation," was organised by National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with Ghana Education Service, CIVITAS Ghana, Hanns Seidel Stiftung and Centre for Civic Education of United States of America. The project is also expected to help young people learn how to monitor and influence public policy and develop support for democratic values and rule of law. The students exhibited high sense of analytical skills, good communication ability, understanding and readiness to contribute to national development.
