African Nations Cup Qualifiers: Ghana 3 Congo 0

Ghana's national soccer coach celebrated his first victory since taking over late last year when the Black Stars whipped the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Jones Cecil Attuquayefio, still showing strong faith in locally-based players, especially Africa Super Champions, Accra Hearts of Oak, fielded only one professional - Italian-based Stephen Appiah.

Ghana went into the lead in the 17th minute through Charles Allotey, but had to wait until four minutes inside the second half before Appiah added the second.

In between the goals, the Black Stars threw away countless chances as the Congolese relied only on offside traps to contain the Black Stars.

The Congolese came into the game early in the second half, but erratic shooting robbed them of a goal.

Allotey was again on hand to add the third goal of the day, slipping the ball past goalkeeper Tokala N'Komba in the 84th minute.
