BoG staff resume work

Accra, April 25, GNA - Staff of Bank of Ghana have resumed work after a two-day strike action that almost crippled commercial banking activity in the country.

The about 2,000 workers embarked on the strike on Monday to press demands for more pay but called off the action at the close of business on Tuesday after a marathon meeting with Mrs Mary Chinery-Hesse, Special Advisor at the Castle, officials of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment and the Senior Staff Association of the Bank.

Mr Dan Dufuor, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association told the Ghana News Agency on Thursday that the Board of the Bank was currently having a meeting with the management "after which we would meet them to discuss issues".

He said they were preparing their documents on the issues involved to address the situation on the ground.

Asked if the 40 per cent salary being demanded by the staff could be met, Mr Dufuor said that would be a subject of negotiation, adding that they were looking forward to something worthy of their efforts, experience and what they bring onto the job.

The meeting with Mrs Chinery-Hesse agreed that the ongoing negotiations concerning all matters tabled for discussion would be expedited and the outstanding issues resolved in the shortest possible time.

It was further agreed that the results of the negotiations would be communicated to the Office of the Chief Advisor not later than one month from the date of the issue the statement. It said in view of the foregoing, "workers of the Bank of Ghana have agreed to resume work".
