Freedom Flame Arrives in Sunyani

Sunyani (B/A), Feb. 22, GNA - The Freedom Flame which has been touring the three northern regions since Monday as part of activities heralding the 50th anniversary of Ghana's independence arrived in Sunyani on Thursday morning.

At about 1000 hours, children from basic and second-cycle schools in the Sunyani Municipality lined up the Sunyani-Techiman road awaiting the arrival of the flame.

Mr. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, who later received the torch on arrival called on Ghanaians to eschew divisive tendencies and resolve to work harder for the accelerated development of the country.

He urged Ghanaians to reflect on the good deeds of the nation's founding fathers, while making positive approach to tackling issues confronting national development.

The flame was held in procession at different spots by, Mr. Baffour-Awuah, Mr. Francis O. Boateng Regional Coordinating Director, Mrs. Akua Debrah, Regional Director of Education through some principal streets of the municipality amidst the blaring of brass band music. Among those present in the procession was some heads of departments and the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Kwame Twumasi-Awuah. The freedom flame idea is deemed as a call for reawakening and an inspiration to make the nation's freedom meaningfully by pushing Ghanaians to the highest limits in all physical, mental or spiritual endeavour.

The torch has since left the Brong-Ahafo region and is expected to travel through the length and breadth of the country. Its journey will end on March 5, 2007 at the polo grounds in Accra where an enactment of the declaration of independence would take place.
