Aborted foetus dumped on refuse dumps

Accra, Jan. 22, GNA - The Police on Monday cautioned the public against the dumping of foetuses on refuse dumps and obscure places saying the act was illegal and could warrant prosecution of culprits. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Samuel Adane Ameyaw Nyamekye, La District Commander, gave the caution when he went to a spot near the La General Hospital in Accra where an unknown person had discarded a fully-grown foetus.

ASP Nyamekye said when he arrived on the scene on Sunday, he saw that the foetus had its placenta in place and it was lying in a gutter near the Hospital.

"I rushed from Church to save the poor boy but on my arrival the baby was dead," the Commander told the Ghana News Agency in Accra. Mr Nyamekye said six foetuses were dumped at various spots at La last year, adding: "In most cases we find them to be fully grown and were usually discarded in obscure places.

"Last year, we had about six cases and most of these foetuses were discarded on rubbish dumps and I am afraid we have recorded yet another at the beginning of the year."

He said the Police had not been able "to unravel these mysteries," because of the uncooperative attitude of the public.

According to him the practice was becoming rampant in the area and warned that women, who engaged in these acts, did so at their own risk.
