WVLC closes down, following workers unrest

Sekondi, Aug. 21, GNA - Western Veneer and Lumber Limited (WVLC), a wood-processing company in Sekondi had been closed down indefinitely, following a weeklong unrest by workers of the company.

The workers numbering about 600 began a strike action on Wednesday, August 16, demanding the dismissal of the entire management, whom they accused of financial malpractices and mismanagement.

The immediate cause of the unrest was management's inability to pay the workers their salaries and wages for July.

A statement signed by Mr Ato Essuman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company said the decision to close down the company, which was taken in consultation with the Ministry of Lands, Forestry and Mines and the Western Region Security Council was to protect life and property.

All attempts by the Western Regional Minister, the Regional Security Council and well-meaning personalities to resolve the impasse between the management and workers of WLVC proved unsuccessful.
