Show Respect to the Presidency

Ghanaians have been called upon to respect the presidency and condemn all sorts of attacks on the President, because such attacks have their own repercussions on the nation.

"If we move up and come down, John Agyekum Kufuor is still our President. He represents the dignity of Ghana as the number one man in the country. And, if we consciously refer to him and his statements as 'irresponsible', it casts an idiotic reflection on us as Ghanaians to the world. A senior citizen in his 70s, Opanyin Kwadwo Anim, made the remarks to ADM yesterday during an opinion sampling on the verbal attack on the President by an NDC official called Rojo Mettle Nunoo.

The President last Saturday reportedly made the claim that Mettle-Nunoo was working for a cocaine baron. In the process, the President mistakenly referred to him as the campaign manager for his twice-defeated political opponent, Professor Atta-Mills, instead of director of communications. Rojo Mettle-Nunoo defiantly and impudently took umbrage and rained insults on him as he jumped from one radio station to another, piling insult after insult on the president.

Public reaction has since been condemnatory with people saying whatever it was the president had said, did not merit the pound of flesh Rojo Mettle-Nuno was greedily taking.

"Even though I think the President went too far with his statement, Mettle-Nunoo's action on radio in the morning against the President of the Republic of Ghana ass uncalled for and needs to be condemned", said Dr. Yaw Amofa.

"Where is democracy leading us to?" Mr. Emmanuel Yeboah asked. He said: "We Ghanaians seem to have overtaken the Americans in democracy, it is only in Ghana that a mere citizen can just stand up and insult a sitting President and go scot-free, thinking he or she is the champion".

Mrs. Victoria Asante, speaking to ADM, said, "I never knew that man was addressing the President, I had a headache when I was told it was the President who was being insulted. I also learnt the President accused him wrongly, but my son, it doesn't matter the President's offence, he does not deserve such treatment from a citizen he governs."

Cecilia Anshong another scandalized person said, "I think the President should have allowed the party supporters and leadership to be carried away by such allegation and not him the father of the nation. No wonder he is being bombarded by undeserving people like Rojo Mettle-Nunoo".

Even though freedom of speech is something each and every Ghanaian adores, some citizens have on number of times expressed shock over how some abuse their right to speak or comment on issues without being censored either by someone or the central government.
