Wontumi heads to Supreme Court to stop Mahama from contesting 2020 elections

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, NPP Ashanti Regional chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, NPP Ashanti Regional chairman

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the chairman of the Ashanti regional chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly taken steps to halt former president John Mahama’s bid to the president of Ghana.

Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly argued that Mahama has already served two terms as president.

For that reason, he went on, Mahama’s decision to contest is a violation of article 66 of Ghana’s 1992 constitution.

This, he said, is because another term in office would be Mahama’s third, which Wontumi claims is against the constitution.

Wontumi has therefore prepared a petition to be sent to parliament and the Electoral Commission (EC), to urge the two bodies to prevent Mahama from seeking another term in office.

According to him, Mahama should therefore be declared ineligible to contest the 2020 presidential elections.

Wontumi further noted that he is therefore going to apply to the Supreme Court for an interpretation to Article 66 of the constitution to help put the matter to rest.

In his opinion, Mahama belonged to the "club of ex- presidents" and it would be wrong for him to be president again.
