Women in Public Life Research Project

In January 1995, funding from the British Department of International Development (formerly the ODA) enabled a collaborative research and training project to be undertaken. The project involved the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, (ISSER), University of Ghana, the National Council on Women and Development, NCWD, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, (GIMPA) and the Development and Project Planning Centre of the University of Bradford, U.K.

Among the institutions studied are the Armed Forces, Customs and Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), the Prisons Service and Police Service.

Altogether, the picture that emerges is that these agencies are male dominated. Not only are women completely outnumbered but also the institutions are organised in such a way as to make it difficult for women to function and make an impact.
