Exams body approves syllabuses for Ghana

Accra (Greater Accra), 9 Feb. '99 -

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has approved new examination syllabuses for Ghanaian candidates for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), a statement issued by WAEC in Accra said today. It said the approval which was given at the just-ended meeting in Accra of the International Examinations Committee of WAEC followed the publication of new and revised teaching syllabuses by the Ghana Education Service (GES) after a review of the Senior Secondary School (SSS) programme.

WASSCE is the Council's new international examination schedule to replace the School Certificate/General Certificate of Education Examinations. The subjects of the new syllabuses are Integrated Science, Animal and Crop Husbandry, Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry . The others are English Language, Social Studies, Business Management, Technical Drawing, Jewellery, Sculpture, Ceramics, Basketry, Textiles and Leatherwork.

The statement said the International Examinations Committee commended Ghana for making adequate provision for its candidates to pursue practical skills for self- employment. "The committee also observed that society's negative outlook on non-university courses needed to be modified."
