We Are Not Training An Elite Army - Yaache

Army Commander, Major General Clayton Yaache has denied that an elite army and a new 64th Battalion popularly known as ‘Commandos’ are undergoing military training. Reacting to a publication in a private newspaper which sought to suggest that a special unit of the army is undergoing training to take over from the previous regiment, Major General Yaache explained that training of some military personnel currently underway at the Shai Hills is a routine practice to improve the battle readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Chief of Defense Staff, Lt General Seth Obeng(picture) asked the media to be cautious of their reportage on issues relating to the Ghana Armed Forces, adding military activities including training schedules are issues of security concern and should not be in public domain.

Lt General Obeng therefore tasked the media to play a responsible role in ensuring that the country’s democracy is nurtured to maturity. The Military High Command noted that it is investigating reports that some soldiers are deliberately leaking information to the media. The soldiers are accused of passing on secret information to the media for money.

While condemning the media reports which according to them might create unnecessary tension in the country, the military warned that those soldiers who are being influenced with money to give information to the media could be dangerous but said no Ghanaian soldier is planning to subvert the constitution.
