Tema, Aug 04, GNA - Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama has called for punishment for law breakers to instil discipline into the society.

"Respect of the law is an essential element of discipline and good citizenship. Therefore, enforcement of laws would be an important aspect of campaign to inculcate greater discipline in the citizenry."

Vice President Mahama made the call in a speech read for him by Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, Tema Municipal Chief Executive, during a public education programme on road traffic regulations and sanitation. It was in connection with his campaign to instil greater discipline in the society.

Alhaji Mahama requested the people to set aside a day in every month for communal labour and sensitise the public on the need for environmental cleanliness.

The Vice President said respect for the law was an essential element of discipline and good citizenship.

"Leaving goats, cattle to roam unto the roads, littering, spitting, doing your thing in plastics bags, dangerous driving, getting to work late or being late for appointments, cheating during examinations must all stop, he said.

Mr Sodja Mensah, Tema Municipal Environmental Chief Officer, said his outfit has embarked on house-to-house inspection and has, between April and June, prosecuted 79 people for sanitary offences.
