Urgently reconvene parliament - Majority writes to Speaker Bagbin

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to reconvene the House for urgent government issues to be discussed and approved in a timely manner.

The caucus is, by this, seeking to address key government items, including the adoption of the Thirty-Fourth Report of the Appointments Committee and a motion on additional financing.

The letter signed by the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, cited Article 112(3) and Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, which will allow 15% of the members of the House to request for parliament to reconvene.

“Additional Financing Agreement between GoG and the IDA for an amount of US$150 million to finance the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.

“Request for Tax Exemption for selected beneficiaries under the 1D1F Programme,” portions of the letter read, as quoted by citinewsroom.com.

The letter further detailed the motive behind the urgent call and what it seeks to achieve.

“Mr Speaker, it is important to state that this request is being brought in good faith to enable the government to discharge its constitutional and democratic obligations to the people of Ghana,” the petitioners added.

Parliament adjourned on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, and according to the Standing Orders, the Speaker of Parliament, on receipt of this request, is expected to summon parliament within seven days.
