Two hawkers killed at Nsawam

Nsawam, June 10, GNA - Two hawkers died and five others got injured when an "O.A" bus with registration number AS 6977 U ran through a group of hawkers at Nsawam and grazed seven vehicles on Monday. Beatrice Asamoah, 23, died on the spot, Mabel Akuffo died in hospital on Tuesday and the five injured are receiving treatment at the Nsawam Government Hospital.

Police Superintendent Sarfo Peprah, Eastern Regional Commander of the MTTU, said the accident happened at 1330 hours when the bus, which was travelling from Accra to Kumasi, allegedly had a brake failure and ran into the hawkers.

He said the driver, Kwaku Boampong, said his brakes failed when descending a hill and tooted his horn to alert the hawkers to make way for him but that failed.

Mr Peprah said the driver managed to control the bus, parked at a filling station near Adoagyiri and reported himself to the police. The driver is in custody assisting in investigations.
