Two Ambassadors present Letters of Credence

Accra, July 25, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor said on Tuesday that the Government was seriously considering the re-opening of Ghana's mission in Nairobi, Kenya, which was closed down in 1983.

Due to the absence of a resident mission, Ghana's Ambassador to Ethiopia is assigned additional responsibility for that country. President Kufuor was receiving the Letters of Credence of the newly accredited Kenyan High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Daniel Mepukori Koikai at the Castle, Osu.

The High Commissioner would be based in Abuja, Nigeria. Also at the Castle to present his Letters was the new Egyptian Ambassador, Mr Self Allah Nosier.

President Kufuor said Ghana and Kenya shared a lot in common adding that through increased co-operation they could learn from each other for their mutual benefit.

Both countries have been espousing good governance; the rule of law and engaged in efforts at promoting peace in trouble spots in West Africa and East Africa.

Kenya like Ghana, President Kufuor noted, was doing well and had just successfully gone through the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). Mr Koikai said it was important for the two countries to have resident missions to serve their mutual benefits.

He said he would, therefore, request his Government to consider the matter.

Kenya at the moment has only one Ambassador in the whole of West Africa.

President Kufuor told Mr Noiser that Ghana and Egypt had enjoyed warm political relations over the past 50 years. He said at the African Union the two had co-operated, exchanged views and worked together.

President Kufuor also said there were improving levels of economic and technical co-operation between them in the areas of manufacturing and agriculture.

Mr Noiser said his tenure would witness enhanced political and economic ties between Ghana and Egypt. He expressed his country's admiration for Ghana's pacesetting achievements of political stability, democracy and peace.
