Toasehene elected Council of State member for Ashanti

Kumasi, Feb 24, GNA - Nana Asiamah Poku-Afrifa II, Toasehene in the Atwima-Nwabiagya district, was on Tuesday elected as a representative of the Ashanti Region to the Council of State. He got 29 votes out of 50 ballots cast.

Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and Offinso Municipality failed to send representatives to the election, which was conducted by the Electoral Commission at Kumasi.

Mr Akenten Appiah Menkah, 75, an industrialist and a founding member of the New Patriotic Party, polled 20 votes, whilst Reverend George Antwi, 63, a Senior Pastor of living Hope Baptist Church at Adum in Kumasi had one vote.

Mr. Kwame Gyawu Kyem, 82, onetime Editor of the Ghanaian Times newspaper, did not get any vote.

Mr. Joseph Alexander Sarkodie Tuffour, 77, a Contractor and a former NDC Member of Parliament for Subin, withdrew his candidature before the election started.

Nana Poku-Afrifa, in his acceptance speech, thanked the electoral college for electing him and pledged to work hard to enhance the development of the region.
