Thirty Die in Election Violence

ACCRA (Reuters) - Thirty people died last week in election-related violence in Bawku, capital of Ghana"s Upper East Region, police told election contender Vice President John Atta Mills during a visit to the town.

The figure was given by state television on Wednesday in a news story about Mills"s visit. The death toll had previously been put at seven, with the victims being killed when a dispute between rival political groups over poll results escalated into an ethnic conflict. Scores are reported to be in hospital. Elsewhere in the West African country the election passed off peacefully. Opposition candidate John Kufuor came out on top in the election, held on December 7, but failed to get an absolute majority. He and Mills will contest a run-off on December 28.
