Teachers Urged To Stem Moral Decadence In Society

Wa (U/W), Aug 4, - Teachers have been urged to use the re- introduction of moral education in the schools to correct the growing moral decadence among them. Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister, made the call in a speech read for him at the first speech and prize giving day of the Wa Catholic Junior Secondary School at the weekend. He asked teachers to see themselves as social and academic role models for their pupils and the communities in which they live. Alhaji Sulemana advised the pupils to keep away from bad habits such as disrespect for teachers and parents, stealing, smoking and truancy. The Right Rev Paul Bemile, Catholic Bishop of Wa, called on the Ghana Education Service to ensure equal distribution of teachers and furniture to schools. He commended the government for re-introducing moral education in basic schools and asked that this should be extended to the senior secondary schools and the tertiary level. Miss Valeria Kuupille, the headmistress, praised the staff and pupils for their hard work which enabled the pupils to perform well in the 1996 Basic Education Certificate Examination. She thanked the Parent/Teacher Association for providing the school with chairs, tables and benches and called on the District Assembly to assist the school with a workshop, a kvip and a bore- hole. Deserving pupils were awarded prizes. An appeal for funds in aid of a workshop yielded 400,000 cedis.
