THE STATESMAN

"Aftermath of police-military brutalities at Akwatia...Ghana losing 300 million cedis a week in diamonds, NDC on warpath against aliens", is the dominant headline on the front page of the Statesman. The accompanying story says the economic cost of the recent military-cum-police crackdown on diamond dealers at Akwatia in the Eastern Region, is estimated at one billion cedis per month.

In another front page story, the Statesman reports that for the second time in the annals of the Fourth Republic, the Minority Group in Parliament is to seek a Supreme Court interpretation of a section of the constitution. The paper says the Minority Group's action follows Parliament's rejection of a motion moved by the Parliamentary Committee on Subsidiary Legislation to annul the Public Elections (Unit Committee) Regulation 1997, C.I. 18, in the House.
