Traders of the Makola number Two market in Accra who are peeved by the ejection odert given them by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) through the Makola Marketing Company (MMC), have called on AMA to account for the 1.6 billion cedis compensation meant for the 1993 fire victims. Under the heading: "1.6 billion compensation package...Traders call for accountability", the Guide says the call was contained in a statement read by Mr George Akueson, Organiser of the Makola Number Two Traders' Welfare Union, at a press briefing in Accra last week, to bring the true picture of the impasse between them and the AMA to the general public. Mr Akueson said the money which was donated by the government, was intially 500 million cedis but was later increased to 1.6 billion cedis to be shared among the traders who fell victim to the fire outbreak in the market, four years ago. "The country is divided - Nana Kweku Oduro", is another Guide story on the front page of the paper. The story says the newly-inastalled 'Dwantoahene' of Agona Swedru in the Central Region, Nana Kweku Oduro the first, has observed with dismay that the country is divided along ethnic lines. Nana Oduro, known in private as Mr Bright Oduro-Kwarteng, a political activist and economist, made this observation in a chat with a section of the press after his installation to climax the annual 'Akwambo' festival of the chiefs and people of Agona Swedru, last week. he described the existence of ethnic polarisation in the country as very unfortunate and called on all and sundry to make every effort to bring about unity for the smooth development of the nation.
