Students agitate over mystery deaths

We are not even allowed to buy drugs and common water from outside

Anxious parents and guardians of some students of Kumasi Academy (KUMACA) on Friday night besieged the school’s campus to demand the immediate release of their wards following the protest by students over the mysterious deaths of three of their colleagues.

Three students of the senior high school, including a final-year student, were said to have died in similar fashion within one week after they were sent home by the school’s authorities.

According to reports, they were referred to the school’s sickbay that is allegedly under resourced before being sent home to die.

Parents and guardians of some students rushed to the school’s premises when news about the mystery deaths got to them.

The panic-stricken students also embarked on a protest to seek answers from the school’s authorities over the development.

The situation escalated when another student was reportedly taken ill again on Friday, March 31, 2017.

Reports said the students spontaneously came out of their dormitories and destroyed the school’s bus and other properties before venting their spleen on the Assistant Headmaster, Ernest Wiafe.

It took the timely intervention of police personnel drawn from the Manhyia Divisional Command to bring the situation on the school’s campus under control.

Authorities have since allowed the anxious students to go home, with the exception of the final-year students that are preparing for the ongoing West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in order to restore order.

Some of the students claimed the school’s sickbay housed in a beautiful edifice has no essential drugs to treat sick students on campus despite being charged for medicals.
