Student Admits Stealing Father's Money

Tema, (Greater Accra) 10 Nov.,

The Tema circuit tribunal has reserved the sentencing of a 22-year-old student, Philip Mantey Djorbuah, who pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to steal his father's 38 million cedis in different currencies. Christopher Adimado, a driver, who was in the dock with Philip, pleaded not guilty to the charges and they were remanded in custody to re-appear on November 20. Assistant Superintendent of Police Mike Yirenkyi, prosecuting, told the tribunal chaired by Major Jacob Yaw Abobor (rtd) that on August eight, while Mr. Moses Angmor Djorbuah, Managing Director of Mobisco Electrical Enterprise, had gone to Church, his son and two others now at large, laid hands on his safe and drawer keys, opened the safe and stole various currencies totalling 38 million cedis. He said Philip gave 18 million cedis to Christopher and he and the two others took the balance, adding Philip then left Ghana and went to stay in Lome till October, when he returned to Tema. The prosecution said Philip used the junior brother of Christopher now on the run, as a messenger between him and the second accused, during which various sums of monies were released by Christopher to the first accused. ASP Yirenkyi said in the course of police investigations, a Toyota bus and Benz 200 saloon vehicles which Philip purchased while in Lome, 250,000 CFA and 1,000 dollars which he paid towards the acquisition of a US visa were retrieved. The total value of the items retrieved by the police is estimated at 9.7 million cedis, leaving a balance of 28 million cedis which he could not account for.
