Parliament will convene today for a special session during which the Speaker, Peter Ala Adjetey, will be swear the oath of office to act as President while President Kufuor is away attending the Commonwealth meeting of governments and heads of State in Australia.

He will take charge till the President or Vice President Aliu Mahama return to the country from their foreign engagements.

The Vice President is currently performing the Moslem annual pilgrimage to Mecca as head of Ghana’s delegation.

The speaker’s assumption of the presidency is in line with the country’s constitution, which stipulates that the Speaker of Parliament shall act in the absence of the President or his vice.

President Kufour is scheduled to leave the country today at 10.30 pm. The swearing of the speaker is expected to take place around 11 pm same day.
