Speaker Returns From Jersey

The Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey has returned from the Island state of Jersey near the United Kingdom where he attended a conference of the Standing Committee of the Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding officers.

The conference was on the theme: "Separation of Powers; How Does it Contribute to the Effectiveness of Parliament in the Discharge of its Responsibility." The conference was attended by nine out of the 11-member executive committee. It discussed and decided on the agenda and deliberated on the 17th conference of Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers to be held in Ottawa, Canada in January 2004.

A statement issued by Mr Cyril Nsiah, Deputy Clerk of Parliament, who accompanied the Speaker said the conference decided on how to make the committee system more effective and find new approaches to time management, an old problem that hampers the work of most Parliaments.

The statement said the Speaker visited the British House of Commons.
