Severe rainstorm hits three towns in Agona District

Mankrong-Junction, (C/R), Jan. 21, GNA- More than 100 building, including the Roman Catholic Church and six classroom blocks for the Agona District Assembly (ADA) Primary school had their roofs ripped off at the Mankrong-Junction, Oketsew and Obratwaowu when a severe rainstorm hit the towns at the weekend.

Ms. Mary Otwe, Assemblywoman for Mankrong-Junction Electoral Area, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Mankrong-Junction at the weekend said the situation had compelled the affected persons to put up with their relatives and friends. She said the heavy rains accompanied by the severe winds also pulled down electricity poles, plunging parts of Mankrong-Junction into total darkness.

Ms. Otwe appealed to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Agona District Assembly and MP for Agona East to assist the displaced people with cement and roofing sheets to rehabilitate their affected houses.

Mr John O Arkoh, Headteahcer of ADA (B) Stream school told GNA that it was God who safe the situation because the disaster struck after the school children had closed and gone home. He noted that apart from roofs which were totally ripped-off, the whole block was also brought down by the storm.

The Head teacher said the collapse of the classroom block has forced the management of the school to send the pupils numbering about 120 to the (A) stream and this could disrupt their studies. Mr Arkoh appealed to the District Chief Assembly and the MP for the area to come to the aid of the school, adding that Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and School Management Committee(SMC) had planned to rehabilitate the devastated building , but it would take time before it is completed due to financial constraints.

Meanwhile, Mr Ben Mensah , District Chief Executive and Mr Bismark Awuku Swedru Area Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) had visited the towns to access the damage caused by the rainstorm.
