The services sector emerged top as the leading employing sector of the economy, in 2014, contributing to more than half of the country’s GDP, that’s according to the Ghana Statistical Service.

This was revealed at the launch of the additional reports of the Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES) Phase One Report. According to the report, over six hundred and thirty-eight thousand (638,000) non-household companies had been registered, with 83 percent of them being small scale enterprises.

Deputy government’s statistician, Baah Wadieh explains further. “8 out of every 10 employees were employed by the services sector, according to the data, it therefore not surprising that we have the service sector contributing more than half of the country’s GDP.

The services sector topped with the majority of the employment avenues found in the services sector,” he highlighted.

He has meanwhile called on the business community to cooperate with the statistical service in order to provide credible and relevant information for continuity. “In an era of evidence based decision making, it is very important and we will entreat the business community to cooperate with us in our next operations”, he said.
