Services of electrical contractors is a burden to ECG

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Wednesday warned that it would stop giving out contracts to electrical contractors whose companies did not supervise its workers to do efficient jobs.

Mr Samuel Yarboi Yartey, Divisional Manager, Metering and Technical Services of ECG, said electrical contractors who were expected to help ECG connect electricity to its numerous customers had become a burden to ECG and if they were not checked they would collapse the company.

Speaking at the regional conference of the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA), Mr Yartey said some unlicensed contractors and foremen connived with ECG staff to connect electricity illegally to customers to the detriment of ECG.

Mr Yartey called on GECA to show interest in ECG's work and report whoever they found involved in illegal connections to ECG officers.

He said ECG staffs were not enough to handle the connection alone especially when electricity was to be extended to other parts of the country.

He said ECG, therefore, entrusted much of its work to electrical contractors but now it appeared ECG had sold out its birthright to GECA adding that some contractors just go on ECG network without any authority from ECG. Mr Yartey declared that that ECG would carry out unexpected audit of all contractors and take measures to check the lapses.

He said electrical engineering was dynamic and so members needed to keep updating their knowledge through training programmes.

Mr Samuel Quansah, National President of GECA, asked members of GECA to stop conniving with staff of ECG to avoid soiling the image of the association and report any illegal practice to the executive.

He called on them to work according to the schedule of the ECG and to specifications.
