SSNIT Credits Students Accounts With Loans

Accra The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) said today that it has already advised banks to credit the accounts of students with the second instalment of their loans for this academic year. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, Mr Nii Adja Anablah, head of students' loan department, said it takes some time for the banks to process payment and advised student to be patient. He said the action of a group of first year students from the University of Ghana, Legon, who yesterday marched to his office to demand payment of their second instalment of their loan was therefore not necessary. Mr Anablah admitted that this year's payment has been unduly delayed but attributed it to late commencement of registration and the long procedure for processing of applications. He advised students not to wait until they enter tertiary institutions before registering with SSNIT. Mr Anablah said as soon as a student qualifies to enter a public tertiary institution, he or she can register for the loan scheme. The student can then apply for the loan when she he or she gains admission. He said the problem of delay in payment of the loan, which normally affects first year students, will be minimised.
