Robbery At Accountant-General:

...2 Companies Used As Conduits
For almost 10 months now, a number of workers of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) at Tema are being deducted huge sums of money from the Controller and Accountant-General for two companies from where the employees were alleged to have credited items.

The companies are Dere J Business Enterprise and Ashanti Foam (ASHFOAM) and the deductions range between ?140,000 and ?240,000 monthly. At least 10 employees are facing this problem.

A letter to that effect dated November 21, 2002 was addressed to the Controller and Accountant General and signed by the Regional Licensing officer, Mr. J. Pobee.

It stated that the 10 members of staff have been experiencing shortages in their pay slips.

The letter went on to say that, it is hoped that the errors would be rectified and the amounts deducted refunded to the victims.

Surprisingly, the name of the former head of the place, Mr. George Ankrah who died almost three years ago is included in the deduction.

The affected workers told Chronicle that moves they made to have the situation rectified hit a rock as officials seems to be less concerned. This paper also met a similar fate for people in authority who are to explain the anomaly but remained tight-lipped.

Our enquiries however revealed that some of these are done deliberately for years and if detected, those responsible simply withdraw the amount to the affected but the belief is that a syndicate is operating at the Controller and Accountant-General's Department who could be using these monies for business.

Unfortunately, attempts to get in touch with the two companies, Dere J Business Enterprise and ASHFOAM, yielded no result.

The Director of Payroll at the Controller and Accountant General's Department was not available for comment when our reporter called.

More to follow as we monitor events at the Controllor & Accountant General's Department.
