Probe GETFUND - Students

Some students of the University of Ghana, Legon, have called for a probe into the disbursement of the GETFund to bring sanity into its operation.

Others also called on government officials to stop leading luxurious lives to enable the government to save money towards funding tertiary education. They made the call during the maiden of “Legon Speaks”, an open forum meant for students, stakeholders and opinion leaders to discuss issues of national interest at the University of Ghana, Legon, last Friday.

The forum also discussed the issue of cost sharing in tertiary education and the possible ways of solving the issue in a more practicable manner. Dr K.B. Asante, an educationist and a former Secretary of Education in the PNDC regime, asked the government to give priority attention to tertiary education to expose students to new thinking and ideas to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Dr Asante said that for Ghana to develop fast, it was necessary to eliminate poverty to make it easier for Ghanaians to have the best education for their wards. “The nation cannot develop fast if the trend of events in the country is not reversed.”

He said cost sharing was a responsibility between government, parents and other institutions and called on government to take a second look at the tertiary education sector and determine what role parents should play to lessen the burden on the state.

Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, out-going Minister of Information and Presidential Affairs, launched the forum, which would be organized every fortnight.
