President opens new mine

President Jerry John Rawlings has opened a new gold mine at Ayanfuri near Dunkwa in the Central Region. The mine, Ayanfuri Gold Mines is the sixth major mine to be opened in the country since 1986 and is operated by Cliff Natural Resources Limited of the United Kingdom.

According to Joe Bradford Nyinah of the Daily Graphic the company which has so far spend C6 billion in exploration activities and C7.1 billion in construction cost has a concession covering a total lease of 99 square kilometres.

At the Commission ceremony, President Rawlings called on the people in t he area to bear in mind the potential environmental damage which can result from poor mining practises. He said no riches can compensate for the destruction of the nation's soil, water and forest practises stressing that it is the responsibility of this generation to guard and keep the resources of the country for the benefit of future generations.
