President Kufuor returns from Bissau

Accra, Sept 19, GNA - The President and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President John Agyekum Kufuor returned to Accra on Thursday after a day's visit to Guinea Bissau at the head of a-four-member high powered delegation.

Other members of the delegation, which was to facilitate the return to constitutional rule in Guinea Bissau after the military take over a week ago, were President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Abdulai Wade of Senegal, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Executive Secretary of ECOWAS.

During an interview with newsmen at the Kotoka International Airport, Mr Kwabena Agyapong, Presidential Spokesman, said ECOWAS leaders who met with the Junta Leader General Verisimo Correira and the head of civil society, Archbishop, Jose Camnaene of Bissau condemned the coup in spite of their recognition of the crisis in the country.

The ECOWAS leaders expressed the hope that a government of national unity headed by a technocrat would be formed to oversee a transitional administration established by the military Junta.

Mr Agyapong said President Kufuor emphasised that ECOWAS leaders were determined to ensure a quick return to constitutional rule, adding that, only such a government will be recognised by ECOWAS. He said all the parties agreed that the current state of affairs is unacceptable.
