President Kufuor leaves for Libya

Accra, Feb.25, GNA -- President John Agyekum Kufuor left Accra on Wednesday for Sirte, Libya to attend the Second Extraordinary Heads of State Summit of the African Union (AU) slated for February 27 to 28. Mr Clement L.N. Eledi, Deputy Minister of Agriculture accompanied the President Kufuor.

Briefing Journalist at the Kotoka International Airport, Mr Kwabena Agyempong, Spokesperson of the President, said President Muamar Al-Quathafi of Libya mooted the idea of the meeting, which would focus on agriculture and water at the last AU Summit in Maputo.

Mr Kwabena Agyepong said during that summit, the Libyan Leader observed that there was the need for Africa to adopt a policy that would facilitate the economic growth of member states.

He said President Kufuor would hold bilateral talks with the Libyan Leader to explore bilateral trade between the two countries, especially in the area of farm produce.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr Joe Akudibilla, Deputy Defence Minister, are already in Libya to hold preparatory talks on the summit.

Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Ministers of State and Air Vice Marshall Edward A. Mantey, Commander of the Air Force, were at the Airport to see the President Kufuor off.
