Poly Alumni wants Poly Councils dissolved

Accra, Dec. 29, GNA - The National Union of Polytechnics Alumni in Ghana (NUPAG) on Friday called on the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (MOESS) to dissolve all Polytechnic Councils with immediate effect.

It threatened that if this was not done, the Ministry should be ready to face the Union in court.

A statement in Accra signed by Mr Samuel Quansah, National Chairman of NUPAG, said most of the Councils were operating illegally in breach of the PNDC Law 321 that established Polytechnic Councils. The Union also expressed concern about the poor manner in which various Polytechnic Councils were governing the Polytechnics. It said in some Polytechnics, Council members had constituted themselves into Managers and Chief Executive Officers and were causing financial loss to the institutions and the country as whole. Mr Quansah stated that there was enough evidence to show cases of conflict of interest in the operations of some Council members, incompetence and abuse of office.

The Union advised MOESS, National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), professional bodies and all other stakeholders in the Polytechnic fraternity to be proactive in their decision-making and desist from appointing people, who did not have the interest of Polytechnics at heart.
