Police Hospital stops staff from going on leave

The Police Hospital Administration on Thursday said it had stopped all medical personnel from proceeding on leave to help with the influx of patients to the hospital following the strike action by junior doctors of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Dr Victor Brakohiapa, Medical Officer-in-Charge of the hospital, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra that "the influx of patients is getting greater but the hospital could, however, not go beyond its 100 bed-capacity".

He said the hospital, which is already under staffed, was compelled to refer some of the new cases beyond its capacity and resources to other health facilities.

Dr Brakohiapa said the hospital was managing on the few medical supplies and budgetary allocation and " therefore, the additional burden from outside is a problem for us".

When the GNA called at Korle-Bu, the administrators were at a meeting with the surgeons and consultants.

The strike action started by the junior doctors four days ago is to demand better conditions of service.
