Parliament To Reconvene On August 12

Parliament is to reconvene on Monday, August 12, to review the state of emergency imposed in the Dagbon Traditional Area of the Northern Region following the events of March 25 which led to the death of the Ya-Na, Yakubu Andani II, and many others.

This follows a directive from the Office of the Speaker, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey and dated Friday, July 12. The house has been on recess since Friday, July 12. It will however continue with the recess after the review of the state of emergency on Monday. The directive explained that the reconvening is pursuant to the rules of the House and the 1992 Constitution.

The President, on Wednesday, March 27, declared a state of emergency in the Dagbon Traditional Area under the Emergency Powers conferred on him by the Constitution. The state of emergency has since been extended has since been extended on a monthly basis due to the delicate nature of the problem.

Before rising on Friday, July 12, the Speaker reminded members that they might be recalled to discharge the responsibility imposed on the House by the Constitution. The last time the state of emergency was extended was on July 12.
