PNC Allegations Are False -NPP

The New Patriotic Party strongly refutes an allegation made by the People’s National Convention that it is issuing ID Cards to non-registered student voters in Navrongo Central to vote for the party’s candidate, Mr Kofi Adda, in the by-election on Tuesday March 25, 2003.

The party admits that as part of its educational campaign its electioneering team paid visits to schools like Navrongo Secondary School, Bosco Training College, UDS and other higher institutions in broad day light to talk to the students on good government and the party therefore views the interpretation that the PNC is putting on the visits as a cynical move by a party in disarray.

The NPP recognises a huge voting population in these institutions and could, therefore, not undermine their importance and influence in society. It is pertinent to recall that at a meeting on Saturday, 23rd March 2003, Mr, Daniel Botwe, General Secretary of NPP, vehemently protested against the decision by officials of the Electoral Commission to allow people with Voter ID Cards but whose names do not appear on the voters’ register to vote. How then would the same NPP turn round to print ID Cards for use by non-registered voters to vote? It is indeed difficult to understand why the PNC embraced the proposals by the Electoral Commission officials at the meeting but now in an about-turn accuses the NPP of planning to rig the by-election by way of distributing ID Voter Cards. If the PNC did not have such hideous plans in mind then why did they support the proposals?

The NPP will like to state that it has gone down to the people and its message is very clear to them. This is why the PNC which has shock waves running through their spine and sensing defeat has decided to behave like wounded tigers by resorting to such statements like the distribution of roofing sheets, corn-mills etc. aimed at distracting the NPP’s attention and focus.

Also in its statement the PNC talked about NDC ‘stomach politicians’ defecting into the NPP. Surely the NPP sees this as a feather in its cap. For these die-hard NDC politicians to have really seen the positive change that the party has been advocating for all these years. Mr Kofi Adda, an idol of the people of Navrongo Central Constituency, will surely win the by-election on Tuesday, March 25, 2003.
