P.C. Appiah-Ofori: Most upright politician

Accra, Sept. 6, GNA - The Ghana Leadership Union (GLU), an oversees non-governmental organisation and think-tank, on Thursday honoured Mr P.C. Appiah-Ofori, NPP Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odoben Brakwa as the most outstanding and upright politician of all time.

The union, which is made up of Ghanaian professionals in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia with a passion for credible and upright leadership in Ghana, said the MP's contributions to the political landscape was well-noted and admired by hundreds and thousands of Ghanaians in the Diaspora.

The Reverend George Asomaning, a representative of the union, who conferred the honour on Mr Appiah-Ofori at a function in Parliament House, said it was their privilege "to honour an incredible politician, who having faced many opposition and obstacles has maintained his commitment to good leadership and integrity in politics".

He presented an unspecified amount to Mr Appiah-Ofori as a token from the union in appreciation of all that he had done and continues to do.

Rev. Asomaning said the Union, in an attempt to keep in touch with the MP would provide him with a personal computer with broadband connection, pay for his monthly bills for as long as he lived. He also expressed the union's intention to support the MP to retain his seat or go solo even if he did not stand on the NPP's ticket. Mr. Appiah-Ofori expressed his gratitude to the union for the honour done him and promised to continue speaking against corruption and other negative practices in government as they retarded the progress of the country.

He said Ghana would have no future if those in authority enriched themselves at the expense of the people and called on all MPs to join hands with him to expose corrupt figures in public.

He said corruption was not only in the public sector but had shown its ugly face in the private sector as well "and not until we all come together to fight this menace, this country will continue to go down". Mr Emmanuel Anyimadu, Clerk of Parliament, said the honouring of the MP should prompt everyone to put in their best to move the country forward.

He said there were other MPs doing very well in other areas, who needed to be honoured and called on other NGOs and institutions to emulate GLU's example.
