Nigerian Highway Robbers Arrested

Five suspected highway robbers have been arrested at Apedwa in the Eastern region, hours after they robbed a number of people on the Accra - Kumasi road. The five, all Nigerians created a barrier near the SOS village at Asiakwa at dawn yesterday, stopped all vehicles and subjected the occupants to all forms of harassment and robbery. Eastern Regional Police Commander Slywen Bart Mettle says, a victim reported the incident to a patrol team, which rushed to the scene and met more victims, including one whose BMW saloon car was seized.

The vehicle was later found abandoned at Amanfro village, near Apedwa. With the assistance of inhabitants of the area, the security personnel searched and arrested two of the suspects, and later three. A sixth person is on the run. Items retrieved include 19 cartridges, a mobile phone belonging to the owner of the BMW car, an axe, foreign number plate, a lady(quote)s cream, mirror and travelling bags.

The Police Commander said the guns used by the robbers and the monies stolen from the passengers that were not found would be retrieved. The five who are in custody gave their names as Chuks Eke, 22, Mike Egbe alias Fiagbe 30, Ezeuduji Chijioke alias Aziz, 20 (leader of the group), Kelvina Ogbanaya 22 and Joseph Okeke 25.
