Newly created districts to be inaugurated in July

Accra, June 2, GNA - The 28 newly created districts would be inaugurated in July, President John Agyekum Kufuor announced in Accra on Wednesday.

He said the Government had good intentions for the country in the administration of the districts and the location of their capital towns. President Kufuor made the announcement when Barima Kwame Nkyi XII, Paramount Chief of Assin Apimmanim Traditional Area, led a delegation from the area to pay a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.

The newly created districts that would increase the number of Metropolitan, Municipal and District areas in Ghana to 138 has Brong Ahafo Region with the highest number of six, followed by the Northern Region with five, three each for Ashanti, Volta and Upper West Regions, two each for Eastern, Upper East and Western Regions and one each in the Central and Greater Accra Regions, President Kufuor appealed to the people in the area not to panic about the location of the new Assin South District Headquarters at Nsuaem/Kyekyewere instead of Assin Manso and to accept the Government's decision in good faith.

He said: "It is the availability of human resources that is more important for the socio-economic development of the Districts and not the facilities available."

President Kufuor announced that with the creation of the new districts, the Assin Manso Senior Secondary School would be upgraded and allocated 16 billion cedis for infrastructure development as well as the provision of potable water to the area.

Barima Nkyi briefed President Kufuor about his recent visit to the United States of America (USA), the West Indies and the United Kingdom (UK) in connection with the Assin Manso Slave Route and the celebration of Emancipation Day.

He said, on a visit to the Liverpool Museum in Merseyside that had been designated European City of Culture, the Director of the Museum, Sir Fleming presented a Silver Lapel Badge to President Kufuor. Barima Nkyi, therefore, asked Nana Amoanimaa Braago, Queenmother of the Adonten Division of the traditional Area, to decorate President Kufuor with the Badge.
