New Residential Rules For UOG, Legon

Continuing students of the University of Ghana will from next academic year, lose automatic qualification for residential accommodation on campus. Priority will be given to freshmen and final year students in the allocation of on-campus accommodation from 2003/2004 academic year. All other students would only be considered after the priority group has been satisfied. This arrangement has become necessary because of the acute shortage of residential facilities on campus and the anticipated inability of the University to adequately improve on the situation in the coming years.

The decision of the university authorities means that each student is assured of at least two years residential accommodation. Currently, premium is given to only final year students in the allocation of rooms. Almost all freshmen admitted this year have been provided with on-campus accommodation.

On-campus hostel facilities are also inadequate yet expensive, compelling many students to commute from down town Accra and other far areas to campus. At the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, students are assured of only one-year stay in residential accommodation on campus, which could be anytime during the course of study.
