NPP does U-turn, ditches decentralised election proposal

XYZ News can report that the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ditched its earlier proposal for a decentralised national annual delegates’ conference for a centralised one scheduled for the Northern regional capital, Tamale.

The party has also moved the date for the conference from March 1, to April 12, 2014.

The decision was reached at a meeting by the national executives in Accra Tuesday.

Party Chairman Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey had earlier said the party decided to decentralise the election to save cost.

According to him, the party needed an estimated Ghc1 million to hold a centralised election and that a decentralised system would have saved the party Ghc850,000.

Some members of the party vehemently kicked against the proposed decentralised system and read suspicions into it.

Forty-six nominees have filed to run for various positions in the party.

About 56,000 delegates are expected at the event.
