Mum in bizarre murder for psychiatric hospital

AN EJISU Community Tribunal has ordered the police to send Gloria Adu-Gyimira, the middle-aged teacher who allegedly killed her five-year old daughter and inflicted serious injuries on another child and her househelp in bizarre circumstances, to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for examination.

The tribunal, presided over by Mr Noble Nkrumah, said the condition of the trained teacher and the events of Wednesday require the services of a competent psychiatrist to examine her to determine whether or not she is mentally sound.

The tribunal said the outcome of the examination will determine whether or not the prosecution of the suspect should proceed.

The tribunal gave the order when the teacher, Gloria Adu-Gyimira, appeared before it to answer a provisional charge of murder .

The tribunal did not take her plea due to the state of her condition.

A large crowd thronged the tribunal to have a glimpse of the teacher and the police had a hectic time controlling them.

Meanwhile, Abena Yeboah, 13, the house-help and the two-year old boy, Akwasi Adu-Gyimira are still receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), police sources have said.

The police at Ejisu were preparing a report to send Gloria to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital for examination at the time of filing the report.

A source close to the Ejisu District Administration said Akwasi is being taken care of in the hospital by a neighbour.

It said since the incident, the child has been crying and arrangements are, therefore, being made to transfer him to another hospital.

It said the body of the five-year-old deceased, Akosua Adu-Gyimira, a stage two pupil of St Louis Jubilee School is, still at the mortuary of KATH awaiting autopsy.

The police said they are yet to establish contact with Gloria's husband.

A Source at the Ejisu Educational Office said Gloria, who until the incident, was a JSS teacher at Baworo L/A JSS, was transferred to the district in September, last year.

It said Gloria hardly visited the education office and anytime she did, she was seen to be very quite.

Gloria Adu-Gyimira is alleged to have behaved abnormally on Wednesday morning, biting parts of the nose, mouth and fingers of her five-year old daughter resulting in her death.

Gloria, who lives in her husband's newly built house at Ajako-Jachie near Ejisu, first attacked her house help and chopped off four of her fingers.

Not satisfied, she pounced on her two-year old son and bit him on the cheek.

The house help, Akosua Yeboah said in an interview that about 2 a.m on Wednesday, she was awakened from her sleep in the room she shares with the rest of the children by a wild scream from her mistress.

She said when she woke up, she was in pain as her left fingers were in the mouth of her mistress.

The girl said she could not scream loud enough for people to come to her rescue due to the Plaster of Paris (POP) she had on her neck from a recent accident, adding however that she managed to free herself only to realise the pain and suffering inflicted on her.

She said she managed to escape and locked herself in the washroom while Gloria pounced on the rest of the children who were still sleeping and in the process killed little Akosua.
